Our Philosophy and Values

ABC Peachgrove Road is committed to providing a unique, caring learning environment based on the concept of “Te Whānau” and the Maori concept of tuakana/teina. This is where younger children learn from their peers and older children learn respect and responsibility for those younger than themselves. Though we do have separate areas and programmes available to the different age groups, children and siblings are encouraged to develop and learn alongside each other.

ABC Peachgrove Road regards itself as a part of the child’s extended whānau and is an active participant in the partnership with the children, parents, whānau and wider community. Whānau are encouraged to participate, consult and share with staff about the beliefs and aspirations they have for their tāmariki, as well as becoming fully involved in centre life and spending time with us whenever they wish. We are also committed to open communication between children, staff, parents and whānau, thus enabling closer relationships to form.

ABC Peachgrove Road will reflect and respect the variety of cultures represented by staff and whānau. Our programmes will encourage the centre community to value the cultural diversity evident amongst its members, as well as reflect the cultural and socio-economic diversity of the local community. Our programme is designed to support all aspects of children’s development, including language acquisition and extension, socialisation and personal interaction skills. We believe that children require time and support to achieve their goals and endeavour to provide them with understanding, reassurance and positive reinforcement to enhance their successes.

The learning environment that we have created enables the children to choose their own activities because we believe that this provides intrinsic motivation for children, who will become more interested in developing their ideas and completing tasks they have set for themselves. The importance and power of play is an integral part of the centre philosophy, while providing children with a safe and secure environment. We encourage children to take responsibility for themselves as much as they can, learning from every success or difficulty. Staff encourage and support children to experience new ideas and activities ensuring this happens in a safe environment. It is our belief that children develop at their own pace, so therefore we will provide an environment which offers a variety of activities, opportunities and experiences for each child. As staff act as role models and mediators, they are assisting the children to solve problems and find peaceful solutions. Through encouragement we are assisting with the development of children’s self-esteem and self-confidence in their abilities. We also appreciate the uniqueness of each child within the centre, valuing and building upon their strengths.

Learning dispositions are recognised and supported by staff promoting the love of learning, courage, perseverance, honesty and integrity. We aim to provide a safe and happy environment where children have the opportunity to PLAY, LEARN and EXPLORE.
