Transitioning
The practice of your child moving into a new room (e.g. from an Under 2 year old room to an Over 2 year old room) is often referred to as the ‘transition process’. We recognise that this transition process can be quite unsettling for both you and your child. However with your support and understanding, along with our committed teachers, we can make this transition as smooth as possible.
Effective transitions aim to support children and families when taking the ‘next step’ with confidence and enthusiasm. It allows your child to adjust to their new environment and begin to make new friendships and bonds with both teachers and other children.
So, we’ve created this simple guide to ease you through the process. Please feel free to ask the teachers or your Centre Director any questions you may have.
The Transition Process
Usually, this takes place over a four to six week period leading up to your child’s moving day. Decisions about transitions are based on both the child’s readiness for the move and the availability of spaces. It is not unusual for some children to find it more difficult than others, and if this is the case we may lengthen the transition process.
A general overview of the process is described below. Please note that some child care centres have their own specific transition process tailored to their needs and environment; however, the transition process generally follows the steps below.
- A week or two prior to the start of the transition process: Teachers will make decisions on your child’s transition based on your child’s needs and space availability in the new room. You will be informed of this.
- Week 1: Your child will start each day in their normal room and make short visits to their new room with a teacher from their current room so that they have a familiar face.
- Week 2: Your child will start each day in their new room and remain there until returning to their current room for lunch and remainder of the day.
- Week 3: Your child will again start each day in their new room and then spend the majority of their day there before returning to their current room for their afternoon sleep / rest.
- Transition process completed: Your child will now be in their new room permanently.
